General Motors Diet (GM Diet) program is a popular diet program in south Asian countries with huge global following. It's a quick weight loss program that claims to help dedicated followers lose up to 5 Kgs in just 7 days.

Results vary among individuals and it would be safe to say that even a relaxed follower of the GM diet program can achieve a weight loss of anywhere from 2 - 5 Kgs by the end of the 7-day program.

The program was named after the General Motors company. There are rumors circulating on the internet that the program was specially designed for GM employees during the mid-80s as a healthy way to lose weight and stay in shape.

It seems that the program was medically approved by Johns Hopkins University's research center and also had supports from FDA and USDA. Unfortunately, none of these claims can be verified and the backstory seem more like an urban legend.

New York Times columnist Roger Cohen did a bit of digging on this story and concluded that the backstory may not be true after all. However, he also claims that program seems to do its magic and was impressed with it.

 

How does GM diet work?

GM diet can help you reduce weight by giving you a diet plan that will deliver less calories than what the body would usually require during a normal day.

When the calorie intake is not sufficient, the body is forced to start burning the excess stored body fat to compensate for the lack of sufficient calorie intake.

Most of the food items on the GM diet plan lacks fats and carbohydrates. However, they are rich in other necessary elements like vitamins, minerals and essential dietary fibre.

 

Why is GM diet better than normal dieting?

Any kind of dieting puts the body into a panic mode and cravings for certain high calorie food increases drastically. The body also tries to slow down the metabolic rate in order to cut the losses as much as possible. It’s a race against your will power and instincts.

Unfortunately, any plan that involves staying hungry over an extended period of time during the day will ultimately fail. Without being disciplined it’s almost impossible to complete any diet plan.

With GM diet, you are given a clear any easy to follow plan and you can eat as much as you desire within the given guidelines. By keeping your stomach full all the time, you are able to trick the body into shedding extra fat using this diet plan.

 

Is GM diet safe?

As per CDC guidelines, losing up to 4-5 Kgs per month would be considered healthy. The benefits of losing excess weight greatly outweigh any short term ill effects if any due to a weight loss program.

Ideally, it would be best to have a diet plan where you can lose 0.5 to 1 kg per week. Unfortunately, the progress may seem too slow for many and may get discouraged by the end of the month.

Taking the GM diet program once a month would give good results with in the safe limits of losing body weight.

If you are diabetic or have other health conditions, you should consult and discuss with your doctor before you start any diet programs.

 

Are there any side effects for the GM diet?

GM diet program is not perfect. It is possible to experience slight headaches and muscle weakness during the program. You will also experience hunger pangs during the first few days of the program.

If the diet program is used in a sensible way, there should be no longterm side-effects. It is advisable to use the program once a month, till the desired results are achieved. This way, you can lose weight in a healthy way and in the long run maintain your desired weight.

 

The 7-day magic - GM Diet Plan

Before starting the program, you have to record your current weight, ideally in the morning just before the start of the program. To keep up the excitement of receiving your gift after this 7-day plan, it would be a good idea not check your weight during the program.

This soup is also known as the GM wonder soup. It’s a healthy low-calorie vegetable soup that can help you sail through your one-week GM diet plan. You can consume the soup in unlimited quantities during the diet program.

 

GM Soup ingredients

  • 3 ½ cups of water   
  • 6 large chopped onions
  • 2 green peppers - chopped (Use red peppers if you prefer)
  • 4 whole tomatoes - chopped
  • 1 head of cabbage - chopped
  • 1 bunch of celeries - chopped
  • You can also include some herbs as per your choice

 

Instructions

  • Step 1: lightly sauté the onions and peppers in a bit of olive oil.
  • Step 2: Add water to the stockpot with tomatoes, cabbage and celeries and bring them to a boil.
  • Step 3: Add the onions and peppers from step one into the stockpot.
  • Step 4: Cook for 40-50 minutes.
  • Step 5: Add salt and pepper in moderate amounts for taste.

 

How often can you use the GM diet plan?

The key to a successful weight loss program is to complete the program as per the program guidelines and then have a healthy balanced diet to prevent regain of the lost weight.

It would be safe to assume that following the GM diet once a month would help achieve the goal of losing weight gradually over the span of few months.

GM diet teaches you to eat a healthy and more natural diet by recommending more fruits and vegetables instead of processed foods.

Maintaining your success with weight loss requires more than the magic of the diet program that helped you achieve this goal in the first place.

When you are dieting, the body goes into starvation mode and adapts accordingly by lowering the metabolic rate and conserving energy. Once the dieting phase is over, many people return to their previous unhealthy diets that made them gain weight in the first place.
